The Iconic Pirate Ship was released soon after the famous Creator 31109 3-in-1 Pirate Ship was discontinued. Does it live up to the legacy of its predecessor? Let’s find out!
The Minifigures
Starting with the minifigs, we get four unique characters, a skeleton, and a brick-built squid. The pirate crew has an amazing level of detail on their prints, featuring both printed and dual-molded legs. The squid is a clever build that uses some of the newer botanical pieces.
The build
The main build is divided into nine bags and, like every 3-in-1 Creator set, comes with three instruction booklets. The process for the primary ship is smooth and engaging: it starts from the middle of the ship’s frame, after which you construct the stern and bow sections.
The wooden hull is nicely executed using layered snot bricks, resulting in a smooth yet detailed structure. The brown tones contrast well with pearl gold elements, such as the window frames and cannon covers. Further steps focus on building the deck, masts, and sails.
The deck is fully covered, leaving plenty of space to display minifigs. The set features a dedicated deck cover, same as in the Pirates of Barracuda Bay set. While the interior detail isn’t overwhelming, it remains solid, featuring an arched entrance to the captain’s quarters and a brick-built ladder leading up to the helm.
Personal notes
There is room for improvement, however. An obvious nitpick is the steering wheel, which uses a simple technic axle connector instead of a proper helm element. A strange choice, given that the anchor received its own dedicated piece. The rigging also has a few flaws: the stern ropes bend because they collide with the outer structure of the captain’s quarters, and the ropes connecting the jib, spanker sails, and masts are missing entirely. Furthermore, the captain’s quarters feel overly simple, containing only a single chair and desk.
Summary
This set is priced at $109.99/£89.99/99.99€ for 1074 pieces and can be rebuilt 3 different ways. For the price, I think it’s worth it. What sets the Iconic Pirate Ship apart from its predecessor is that it doesn’t feel like a typical 3-in-1 set. The previous release featured a mixed colour scheme of reds and greens on the hull and left the lower deck exposed. The new ship boasts a much more cohesive design and an elegant solution for covering the lower deck.
As a result, the finished ship looks like a fully-fledged sea vessel without many of the trade-offs typical of 3-in-1 builds. The unique minifigs and solid side build are simply the cherry on top.
