Every month, we pick a LEGO photographer active in our community and share some of their work and a little about themselves. This month we flight to the USA to meet startrevlegos!

Hello, I am Trevor, aka StarTrev from Portland, Maine, USA.

I’ve been creating work as StarTrev for about 3 years now. I really enjoy this hobby because it combines three things that I love: LEGO, photography, and photoshop.

In my professional career I use photoshop to create marketing materials, and I purchased my first real camera so I could photograph work events. But none of that is nearly as fun as taking these wonderful little bricks and bringing them to life.
Plus, no one ever asks me to make a lightsaber glow for work

I shoot all my photos using a Sony A6000 camera with a variety of lenses, though I most often use a 30mm macro lens.

I obviously love Star Wars, and that’s my primary source for content, but I also enjoy classic space, pirates, city, and other sets. I try not to limit what I shoot because to me LEGO is all about using your imagination!

On a more personal note… I started this hobby in February 2022 while stuck at home with my kids during another LONG Maine winter. My late father was battling cancer, and Covid was still in a dangerous phase, so we had to be very careful about what we did and who we saw so as not to put him at additional risk. We spent a lot of time at home.
I think that finding LEGO again at that time was really special and important because it allowed me to connect with my kids, but also to connect with MY inner child at a difficult time for our family.

Finally, I just want to say how much I love and appreciate the LEGO community! Everyone has been so supportive, friendly, fun, and silly. In a world of often toxic social media, LEGO is a bright spot—filled with lighthearted and kind people. I love you all and am so glad to be a part of this community.

The exclusive photo
Most of my LEGO photography centers around characters/minifigs that I find interesting, and this one has it all: arm printing, leg printing, duel molded boots, awesome helmet, unique trans-green sword, and a nostalgic “Power Rangers” look.

This character also gave me a chance to highlight some of my signature StarTrev™️ photo and editing styles, including: smoky atmosphere, saber glow, flying/mid-air figs, and a touch of motion blur.

One of the challenges of using real smoke in photos is capturing it at just the right moment. Too much smoke and your photo can look washed-out. Too little and it looks like nothing at all.

The final photo I chose for this was the one where the smoke was swirling around the fig in a natural way, without obscuring the character. I hope you like it!
