Artist spotlight: bebs_bricks

Every month, we pick a LEGO photographer active in our community and share some of their work and a little about themselves. This month we travel to England to meet bebs_bricks.

Hi I’m Bebs, I’m a photographer based in the North of England.

I’m a huge fan of Lego and back in 2020 I decided to combine both my passions and created my Bebs_Bricks profile on Instagram.

I create my photos using a variety of skills which I’ve picked up over the years from studying production at university and also through personal experiences in the media field.

Photography isn’t just a hobby for me, it is part of my day to day life as I work in a creative job and I have just recently established myself as a wedding photographer.

On the Lego photography front, I will often capture minifigures naturally, using Lego sets I own or the environments around me (it’s very picturesque where I live).

However if my photos are based on fantasy worlds or the concept requires special effects, I will spend a bit longer with the tools in photoshop!

Since my early years, Lego has been a huge part of my life. The interest began back with the release of the 2005 Batman theme, over time my collection has expanded to Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and more!

As a kid the plastic bricks were a means of play and creativity. While the creative element remains, Lego has become a break from my daily routine, it’s even become a therapy for when some days are harder than others.

The Exclusive Photo

For my exclusive photo I decided to capture this scene which I’d just put together whilst making the Lego Icons Minas Tirith set. I chose this image in particular as Lord of the Rings is one of my favourite Lego themes.

It is also something I’m currently building and as I continue to put the set together, I couldn’t get over the amount of detail the set displays in both the interiors and exteriors. The Fellowship of the Ring is also my personal favourite of the film trilogy, and Gandalf’s research at the beginning of the movie is one of the best moments as it establishes how big of a threat the ring really is to Middle Earth!

To create the scene, I used my Canon DSLR and a 18-55mm lens. The scene was currently being built, however I had to remove elements of the set so that I could capture what was happening within the walls of the library.

I placed an LED light above the set to light the room and surrounded the camera with two pieces of black card to help create the darkness of the night sky…my water bottle was placed for structural support. After capturing the photo, I enhanced the image in photoshop by removing the grain and added other details such as the steam above the teacup.

I do realise that I have inadvertently created Lo-Fi Gandalf…all that’s missing is a cat by the window and the rain. It’s been a pleasure to be highlighted by Brickcentral this month. I love being a part of this community and interacting with you all on my posts and in messages. I look forward to creating more photos and sharing them within this community in the future!
